FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out)

Seeing that you missed out on an event, or that your peers are living these jet setting lifestyles can actually have a negative impact on your own self-esteem. You do not want to miss out on anything, but if you do not see what you are perceiving as you ‘missing’ then you actually free yourself to live in the moment and not measure your personal success against those of others. What is shown on social media is rarely the actual reality.

Free Time

Look at your phone or tablet, it will usually tell you just how much time you spend on it. Sometimes this can be upwards of 6 hours and that is just scrolling or messaging. Are you really interacting with those around you? You will gain hours of time in which you can pursue social activities in person which are ultimately far more fulfilling.

Moving On

Social media has made it a lot easier to stay in touch with people, see what they are doing, and who they are doing it with. If you have had a past relationship which has been difficult to get past and you find yourself checking their social media on a regular basis this is not helping you to live in the here and now. Disconnecting will allow you to do this. You will think about that person less and less, and actively engage with those around you in activities and conversations which will help in the moving on process. This goes for lost friendships as well.

After turning off those notifications and going about your day to day life, you will find that you are able to be a lot more motivated both professionally and personally. You can take up new hobbies like hiking where there is no cell service and simply enjoy just living away from a world where everyone shares everything all the time. This is not to say you have to stay away from social media forever, just give it a try and you may just find that less is more than enough when it comes to being present in the real world.
