And we’re back with the books of the week! Obviously, this is the best time of the week, now you can see all the juicy books we have perused for your reading pleasure. This week definitely has some good ones that you will not be able to put down. We found the perfect story of a family in upheaval, a light thriller, and a new novel from one of the best authors of the decade.
The Porpoise by Mark Haddon
Mark Haddon wrote the beautiful The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night which won him many an accolade and with his latest novel, it is sure to do the same. The book deals with some pretty tough themes of female agency and what the relationship between a father and daughter should not look like. But he does it through the retelling of the ancient Greek story of Antiochus. This story revolves around a tragic accident that leaves father, Philipe a widower with a baby daughter named Angelique who he develops an unhealthy love for. A man named Darius eventually happens upon the young Angelique and as you can imagine, mayhem ensues as he attempts to save her from the prison her father has made for her in her closeted life on Philippe’s estate. The book is just as captivating as the author’s first novel if at times hard to stomach but ultimately worth it for the end.
Summer of ‘69 by Elin Hilderbrand
Hildebrand always takes her readers to the area of Nantucket and her stories tend to focus on female friendship and finding love again but in Summer of ‘69, she decided to switch it up and a piece of historical fiction. The Levin has spent every summer of their lives at their Grandmother’s house until the year of ‘69 when Ted Kennedy does something awful and the first man walks on the moon. These events are the backdrop to something awful that the family must deal with.
