Mark Wahlberg turned his rough upbringing into a raging success in music, modeling and especially acting. He is currently one of the biggest leading men in Hollywood, not to mention the highest paid.
Things You Didn’t Know
Mark Wahlberg is one of the few entertainers who successfully made the transition from teen pop sensation to respected actor. But what makes Wahlberg so fascinating isn’t just his Hollywood accolades, it’s his story. Here are many things you didn’t know about the former rapper, actor and producer.
Not Such A Raging Success To Start
You may know that Mark Wahlberg was the front man of the hip-hop group Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, popular in the early ‘90s. But did you know in 1992, the readers of Rolling Stone voted Wahlberg the “worst male singer of the year”? Despite the success of “Good Vibrations,” his second album was a commercial flop and he left the music world to pursue acting. (Good thing he did).
Not So Squeaky Clean
Mark was arrested over 20 times during his teenage years including an attempted murder charge. Who would have thought the now super successful actor was once a criminal? We’re just happy that he managed to turn his life around in such an incredible way.
Mark had over 25 incidents on his record with the Boston Police Department throughout his teen years. By 14 he had dropped out of high school. At 15 he had a civil action lawsuit filed against him. He has since publicly apologized numerous times, and does everything he can to be a better role model.
Eventually Completed High School
Due to the circumstances of his young life, Mark Wahlberg dropped out of school. Yet that hasn’t stopped him. Years later, at age 42, he completed his high school education not only for himself and his children but also “for all the other teens and adults who have inspired [him] by their commitment to graduate.”
The Brady Bunch
Mark has 8 siblings. Their names are Arthur, James, Debbie, Michelle, Paul, Tracey, Robert, and Donnie. Plus if that wasn’t enough, the star additionally has 3 half-siblings from his father by another woman! Wow imagine Christmas at the Wahlberg household.
An Interesting Dedication
Wahlberg penned a memoir in 1992, aptly title Marky Mark. He dedicated the book to his manhood, something that he says he now regrets, but thought was funny at the time. It appears that Marky Mark has somewhat of a sense of humor and definitely likes to keep things on the funny side. Never the less, what about just simply dedicating it to your mom?
Most Beautiful Man Award
In 1992, People magazine named Wahlberg one of the world’s 50 Most Beautiful People. With his good looks and enviable bod, he was named alongside other Hollywood hotties such as, Leo Dicaprio, silver fox George Clooney and Brad Pitt.
Victim Speaks Out
Almost 28 years after Wahlberg was arrested for assault, the victim (Johnny Trinh) met Wahlberg face-to-face. Trinh stated, “He paid for his crime when he went to prison. I am not saying that it did not hurt when he punched me in the face, but it was a long time ago. He has grown up now. I am sure he has his own family and is a responsible man.”
Burger Boys Are Back In Town
Wahlberg’s brother Paul owns a Boston-based burger chain, and there’s even an A&E reality show titled Wahlburgers, following the hilarious relationship between Mark, Paul and their other famous brother, Donnie Wahlberg, as Paul expands his burger empire.
Unwanted Body Part
Mark was born with a third nipple. “That is correct.” he told Australia’s Nova FM when asked if it were true. “Right below the other one. It’s actually the size of an infants nipple, it didn’t grow.” He has no plans of losing it either. “I’ve come to embrace it” he told Rolling Stone “that thing is my prized possession.”
Past Comes To Haunt Him
Mark’s rocky past is no secret, he spoke of how he had to get out of the life of crime: “As soon as I began that life of crime, there was always a voice in my head telling me I was going to end up in jail. Three of my brothers had done time. My sister went to prison so many times I lost count. Finally I was there, locked up with the kind of guys I’d always wanted to be like. I realized it wasn’t what I wanted. I’d ended up in the worst place I could possibly imagine and I never wanted to go back. First of all, I had to learn to stay on the straight and narrow.”
Iconic Role Turned Down
Mark Wahlberg has dropped out of two iconic roles in hugely influential films. He was originally cast as Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain. This role ended up going to Heath Ledger, earning him his first Oscar nomination. He was also cast as Linus in the Ocean’s films. The role the eventually went to Matt Damon. Interestingly enough, the actors get confused for each other by fans very often.
Old Video Released
Mark is known for his hugely muscular physique. But this video has made its way out of the woodwork from his Marky Mark days. Did you know that he actually filmed a workout video? He offered his top tips and words of advice to those looking to get in shape. In typical 90’s style, this video is quite comical. But boy he really knows his stuff from the look of those guns.
Not Just A Pretty Face
In 2013 Wahlberg became a co-owner of the Barbados Tridents. “I am a huge cricket fan now,” he said. “I’m excited to be a part of the Limacol Caribbean Premier League because I know cricket is huge in the Caribbean and a rich part of the region’s heritage. Sports and entertainment are a powerful combination, and the LCPL will appeal to a huge audience worldwide.”
Troubled Youth Turns Good
After his extremely troubled youth, Wahlberg had a passion for giving back to troubled kids just like he was. He started the Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation stating that “It is the mission of the Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation to improve the quality of life for inner city youth through a working partnership with other youth organizations.”
Entourage Based On His Life
The hit HBO series Entourage which Mark executive produced, is actually loosely based on Wahlberg’s early years in Hollywood. Wahlberg has even guest appeared on the show several times. We wonder if he knew it was going to be such a success.
Ashamed Of His Tattoos
Wahlberg has been getting tattoos since he used a sewing needle to ink a shamrock on his arm at 12 years old. Eventually he added other marks to his body, including Sylvester (of Sylvester and Tweety) and a portrait of Bob Marley. He even had his own name tattooed on his shoulder. However, he’s actually in the process of getting them all removed, and he’s bringing his kids to the appointments so they don’t end up with tattoos themselves.
His Wife Is So Proud
He’s won awards in both music and film. In July 2010, he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and he was even nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his work in The Departed. He has four beautiful children with his stunning wife who all came to show their support.
New Kid On The Block
Donnie Wahlberg, Mark’s brother, was the founder of the pop group New Kids on the Block. After a 14-year hiatus, they reunited in 2008, to the happiness of their die hard fans and started recording new music again. They even released a new EP and went on tour in 2017, with a hit single ‘One More Night’.
Outspoken About The Military
Not only has Mark played a few military roles, he’s also outspoken in his support for the armed forces.”For actors who sit there and talk about, ‘Oh, I went to SEAL training.’ I don’t give a **** what you did. You don’t know what these guys did. For somebody go sit there and say my job was as difficult as being in the military? How dare you, while you sit in a makeup chair for two hours?” He is not afraid to speak his mind, clearly.
In A Video Game
Remember in the early days of video games when there would be a terrible pre-shot video that you could “edit” in order to create your very own music video or action scene? Well, the Funky Bunch had one of those! It’s on many “worst games of all time” lists. Despite the band’s success, the game never really hit it off with fans.
Stroke Of Luck That Kept Him Alive
Wahlberg was supposed to fly from Boston to Los Angeles on the infamous plane that terrorists hijacked in 2001. But he changed his travel plans last minute. He had to publicly apologize after making the comment: ‘If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn’t have went down like it did. There would have been me saying “OK, we’re going to land somewhere safely, don’t worry”.’ Many were upset by the actor trying to be funny about the situation, prompting him to say ‘I deeply apologize to the families of the victims that my answer came off as insensitive, it was certainly not my intention.’
Family Man Now
Mark Wahlberg and his wife Rhea Durham didn’t get married until 2009, after having already three of their four children together and had been dating since 2001. Their kids are Ella Rae Wahlberg (2003), Michael Wahlberg (2006), Brendan Joseph Wahlberg (2008), and Grace Margret Wahlberg (2010).
Controversy For World’s Highest Paid Actor
Wahlberg was named the highest paid actor of 2017, earning a whopping $68 million. However there has been recent backlash over gender discrimination of pay, with it being reported that he was paid $1.5 million for reshooting scenes in the movie, “All The Money In The World” while his co-star Michelle Williams was paid a measly $80 a day, totaling less than $1000. “That works out to Williams being paid less than one percent of her male co-star,” USA Today.
All The Money In The World
It is kind of ironic don’t you think that the world’s highest paid actor starred in a movie with this title. All The Money In The World, which re-tells the kidnapping of a young John Paul Getty III, has currently made over $28m worldwide. Wahlberg’s team apparently negotiated a substantial fee for his involvement in the reshoot, while Williams (who’s represented by the same agency, William Morris Endeavour) just wasn’t told about the deal.
Controversial Unexpected Events
Following the controversy over the significant disparity in pay, Mark Wahlberg spoke out and agreed to donate the $1.5 million he earned to the sexual misconduct defense initiative “Time’s Up”. Wahlberg stated that his donation would be in the name of his co-star, Michelle Williams, saying:”I 100% support the fight for fair pay.” Wahlberg and his agency, William Morris Endeavor, donated $2 million to the legal defense fund that was founded in response to the #MeToo movement, claiming:”we are committed to being part of the solution.”
What Was Williams Response?
Williams spoke out:”Today isn’t about me. My fellow actresses stood by me and stood up for me, my activist friends taught me to use my voice, and the most powerful men in charge, they listened and they acted.” She stated firmly that “it takes equal effort and sacrifice” to make a film.”Today is one of the most indelible days of my life because of Mark Wahlberg, WME (William Morris Endeavor) and a community of women and men who share in this accomplishment.”
