Ally McBeal Stars 20 Years Later…..

From micro-miniskirts to dancing babies, Ally was the hot shot lawyer that audiences couldn’t get enough of. But where are the cast today? Let’s check in and see what they are up to and what they still look like. You may be surprised by some of the stars who started as guests this show.

Portia De Rossi Then

De Rossi portrayed the lawyer Nell Porter, who is romantically involved with the firm’s partner John Cage and is a close friend of Ling Woo.

After “Ally McBeal,” De Rossi landed the role of Lindsay Bluthe-Funke on the top TV comedy show “Arrested Development” (2003-13). Then she featured in the TV series “Scandal” (2014-16). Some of her film credits over the years include “The Night We Called It a Day” (2003), “Cursed” (2005), and “Now Add Honey” (2015). She is also well known for being married to TV host Ellen Degeneres.

James Marsden Then

The former Versace model, got his big break on the show as one of Ally’s love interests Glenn Foy, but quit the firm out of loyalty to his fired friend Jenny, with the two of them branching out to start their own law firm.

In 2004, heart-throb Marsden co-starred with Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling in the romantic drama The Notebook. In 2007, he bagged a coveted role in the film adaptation of Hairspray. His next role was with Amy Adams in the Disney hybrid animated/live action film Enchanted, playing Prince Edward. He even sang one song as a duet with Adams The movie earned more than $340 million worldwide at the box office.

Courtney Thorne Smith Then

Courtney Thorne-Smith portrayed the role of Billy’s wife, Georgia Thomas who joins the law firm as an associate. Her relationship with Billy is shown to be strained because of his affection for Ally.

Since her time as Georgia, Thorne-Smith has kept an active role in television, appearing as a main character on the popular show According to Jim from 2001–2009, and a recurring role on Two and a Half Men. She also had a starring role in the 2009 made-for-television film “Sorority Wars.” Most recently, she voiced over for an episode of the TV series “Robot Chicken”.

Jane Krakowski Then

Krakowski played the role of big gossip and nosy office secretary Elaine Vassal. Our favorite moments of this character, were when Vassal invented the ‘Face Bra’ contraption, that is strapped to one’s face to reverse signs of aging.

Jane Krakowski went on to forge an amazing career for herself. She earned four Emmy nominations for her role as  Jenna Maroney on 30 Rock and a fifth for portraying Jacqueline White on Fey’s Netflix series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Krakowski is also a talented dancer and singer on Broadway, even winning a 2003 Tony Award for the revival of Nine and earning another nomination for her role as Ilona Ritter in She Loves Me. It seems she is unstoppable.

Lisa Nicole Carson Then

Lisa played the role of Ally’s best friend and roommate Renee Raddick.  At the same time, she also bagged herself a gig on ER. Speaking of her time on the show she said: “I was the belle of the ball in the late nineties, with roles on Ally McBeal and ER. I’ve always been full of energy and would often be twirling around on sets.” But what about now? This actress did not have it easy, and a dark realization on set, forced her to change her lifestyle.

Lisa Nicole Carson Now

After Ally McBeal ended in 2002, Carson took a much needed break from the acting world of Hollywood when she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder; she opened up about her struggle with the illness in a 2015 article in Essence magazine. She has since returned to acting, with a recent appearance in BET’s The New Edition Story.

Peter MacNicol Then

MacNicol played the likeable role of John Cage, one of the co-founders of the law firm Cage and Fish (along with his best friend Richard Fish). Cage has many weird and wonderful habits, including making weird sounds from his nose, and our particular favorite, when he insists on being barefoot when making a closing argument. Oh we miss him.

Peter MacNicol Now

After the show, he starred in movies including “Breakin’ All the Rules” (2004) and as Secretary of Defense in “Battleship” (2012). His TV appearances were strong, in shows such as “Boston Legal” (2006), “Grey’s Anatomy” (2010-11), and “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” In 2015, he appeared as one of the main cast members on the TV show “CSI: Cyber.” He isn’t going anywhere!

Greg Germann Then

Germann portrayed the character of Richard Fish, a law school classmate of Ally and one of the original partners of Cage and Fish. He was weirdly sexy who else would agree?

Germann has appeared in a selection of renowned TV shows since Ally, including “House of Lies” (2012), “Raising Hope” (2010-2013), “NCSI” (2013) and “Limitless” (2015-16). He also has noteworthy films under his belt, such as “Sweet November” (2001), “Bolt” (2008), and “Here Comes the Boom” (2012). He currently appears as Hades in the TV series “Once Upon a Time” (2016).

Vonda Shepard Then

Shepard appeared in the show as herself, performing at the local bar where the characters usually met for a drink after work. Her rendition of Kay Starr’s “(Everybody’s Waitin’ for) The Man with the Bag” on a season four episode became a popular holiday song. We want to re-watch that episode.

Vonda Shepard Now

The singer has since released a few albums since her time on the show including “Chinatown” (2002), “From the Sun” (2008) and “Rookie” (2015). She also acted briefly in the TV series “State of the Union” (2009-2010). Right now, she is laying low and enjoying the quiet life.

Regina Hall Then

In 2001, Hall landed the role of Coretta Lipp, which was originally a recurring role over several episodes but was made into a main character in the 5th season of the show.

Regina is best known following the show, for playing the hilarious character Brenda in the Scary Movie series. Her other significant films include: Think Like a Man (2012), About Last Night (2014), Vacation (2015) and Girls Trip (2017).

Hayden Panettiere Then

Panettiere played Ally’s daughter Madison in the final season of the show. Created from a donated egg which Ally did not realize had been fertilized, 10-year-old Maddie reunites with her mother Ally, giving her a reason to leave Boston for a new life in New York.

Panettiere has become a successful TV actress. She went on to portray the cheerleader Claire Bennet in “Heroes” (2006-10), a role she reprised in the TV mini-series “Heroes Reborn” (2015-16). She also featured in the TV musical drama “Nashville” (2012-16), earning Golden Globe nominations in 2014 and 2015 for Best Supporting Actress in a TV series. The actress has also given her voice talent in many video games. Some of her film credits include “The Forger” (2012), “Scream 4” (2011), “I Love You, Beth Cooper” (2009), and “Shanghai Kiss ” (2007).

Robert Downey Jr Then

He played the role of Ally’s beau Larry Paul, a main cast member in season four. Robert sang a duet of Every Breath You Take with Sting on the show,  which was so popular with viewers, it won a Golden Globe.

After “Ally McBeal,” Downey, Jr.  landed the iconic title role in the “Iron Man” franchise (2008, 2010 and 2013) and reprised the role in “The Avengers” (2012), “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015) and “Captain America: Civil War”. He also starred in other hit blockbusters such as “Sherlock Homes” (2009), and “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” (2011)- which won him a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical in 2009. The same year, he was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe Awards for Best Supporting Actor in the film “Tropic Thunder” (2008).

James Legros Then

James played the role of Mark Albert, a top lawyer, known for being eccentric and incredibly skilled at closing an argument.

Since “Ally McBeal,” James has starred in a number of films and TV series. His most recent project is TV series “Billions” (2016). He was also seen on the big screen in projects like “Trust the Man” (2005), “Zodiac” (2007), “Vantage Point” (2008) and “Battle Creek” (2015).

Christina Ricci Then

Christina Ricci appeard as a guest-star on Ally McBeal. Her character was the feisty lawyer Liza Bump, who is hired to work at Cage and Fish. She also then becomes Richard Fish’s love interest.

Now 37 years old, Ricci hasn’t had any trouble in Hollywood. She has since taken on the role of Zelda Fitzgerald in Amazon’s 10-part miniseries Z. “I can tell you that in my experience, I have never, ever been cast in a role like this and I would never get this part normally. I’m just not seen in that way.”

Barry Humphries as Dame Edna Then

Australian comedian Barry Humphries (aka Dame Edna Everage) was recruited to Ally McBeal to help raise poor ratings in the final seasons of the series. Humphries appeared in a number of episodes as Claire Otoms, a client of Cage and Fish. Claire shared the same dress, voice and mannerisms as Dame Edna.

Barry hung up Edna’s wig and glasses in 2012, to the despair of many fans. He has been awarded many times for his comical character, and has been nominated four times for a British Academy Television Award, all in the Best Light Entertainment Performance category. He spends most of his time out of the spotlight these days.

John Bon Jovie Then

Bon Jovi, joined the cast as Victor Morrison, who Ally hires to paint her newly purchased house. Unable to find a suitable nanny for Maddie who is now living with her, Ally eventually recruits Victor to care for her daughter. He and Ally also embark on a (short-lived) romance.

Bon Jovi has had magnanimous success. The band has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling American rock bands of all-time. Bon Jovi was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and in 2017, it was announced that Bon Jovi will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, some time in 2018.

Barry White

Barry White, is John Cage’s idol in the show. White’s song “You’re the First, the Last, My Everything” plays in John’s head whenever he needs inspiration in the court room or in his personal life. Barry White actually appeared on the show as a birthday present from John’s girlfriend Nell (Portia De Rossi).

White sadly passed away in 2003 from kidney failure.  On September 20, 2004, he was posthumously inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame at a star studded ceremony held in New York, in his honor. On September 12, 2013, which would have been White’s 69th birthday, he was posthumously awarded a Hollywood star of Fame.

Haley Joel Osment Then

Haley appears as a little boy in Season 2 who wants to sue God for giving him leukemia. The child star’s breakout performance Sixth Sense debuted six months after his Ally episode aired, and cemented him in the acting world as a real talent.

Since the son of Forest Gump grew up, he looks totally unrecognizable. He starred in the Entourage movie, and currently is juggling a few different projects, such as the new Amazon pilot Oasis, an upcoming Hulu project from comedic genius’ Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg called Future Man, as well as HBO’s Silicon Valley.

Gil Bellows Then

Bellows played the character of Billy Thomas, Ally’s former boyfriend and an associate at Cage and Fish. Even though he is now married, his character is shown to still be in love with Ally. Do you remember when Billy colors his hair platinum blond in season three? This was a great highlight.

Gil Bellows has a lot of TV credits to his name. He had his first major film role in 1994’s The Shawshank Redemption. After Ally McBeal, he played Matt Callan on The Agency. Then he starred in the 2014 movie Kill the Messenger and the 2016 miniseries 11.22.63. He also had regular roles on the series Eyewitness and Patriot, and many more to date.

Callista Flockhart Then

Flockhart played the main role of Ally McBeal, a lawyer at Cage and Fish who during the series’ is in search for her soulmate while juggling a demanding career. She was comical, lovable and viewers absolutely connected with her. We wonder what the character would be doing now.

Calista Flockhart’s performance in Ally McBeal earned her nominations for three Emmys, five Golden Globes (one of which she won), and four SAG Awards over the course of the show’s five seasons. Following the show, she had a major role on Brothers & Sisters from 2006–2011 and appeared as Cat Grant on Supergirl. She is married to actor Harrison Ford and has a son.

Lucy Liu Then

Liu played the role of the stern attorney Ling Woo. You did not want to mess with her, and she meant business.  Liu represented Asian women on TV, and her character was known for being  ” cold and ferocious and knowledgeable in an art of sexual pleasure unknown to the Western world”.

Her most famous roles came in “Charlie’s Angels,” (2003), where she starred alongside top Hollywood stars Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore. She also featured in “Kill Bill” series (2003 and 2004), “Lucky Number Slevin” (2006) and “Kung Fu Panda” trilogy (2008, 2011 & 2016) where she voiced over for the character of Viper, the snake. She wasn’t done there, she also guest starred on hit TV shows like “Ugly Betty”(2007), “Joey” (2004-05) and “Girls” (2016). Liu currently plays Joan Watson in a U.S. adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes stories called “Elementary” (2012-16).
