Learn To Love Yourself Before Loving Someone Else

Everyone has heard the old adage, “you can’t love someone else until you learn to love yourself.” This might seem like a corny turn of phrase but if you dig deep you will see that it is actually very true. When you love yourself you do not accept behaviors from others in the form of relationships, friendships or work ‘relationships’ that would be deemed as disrespectful. But in order to get to the point where you realize your own self-worth you have to become self-aware. These are not easy for anyone. Here are some steps you can take to put yourself on the path to self-love.

Stop Comparing

Everyone looks at themselves in the mirror and examines their perceived imperfections. Is your nose to big? Are my lips to thin? This in itself is an act that is the complete opposite of self-love. Instead of asking what is wrong with yourself you need to change that narrative to what is great about yourself. Do not look at photoshopped celebrities or Instagram fitness models, that is not reality. Instead, look at yourself and choose one to three things that you like about yourself and write them down or say them to yourself.

Friendship

Everyone needs a support system in terms of their friends and family who will help them during times of emotional duress or be there during times when you want to celebrate. Surrounding yourself with positive influences is the key to loving yourself as well. If you have a friend that constantly critiques you or puts you down then this is having a detrimental effect because it might make you ask yourself what is wrong with ‘you’ when there is nothing wrong. Instead, this is usually a form of projection where the friend does not like these things about themselves. Only spend time with people who lift you up, not put you down.

You Deserve Love

Nobody deserves to be alone and think that they are unworthy of love. Everyone deserves love in the form of a romantic partner, friendship, and family. But you must love and respect yourself and no what that looks like to you before you can expect someone else to know how to love you. If you are constantly focusing on negative things about yourself, chances are your partner may begin to mention them too. Love each and every inch of your body and your personality and eventually, a partner will do the exact same. Until then, get to know yourself, you are worth it.
