Can You Guess Which Christmas Movies Were the Highest-Grossing of All Time?

Christmas is finally approaching, calling for cute pajamas and movie nights. The atmosphere is festive and light, families are getting together, and a new year is approaching with a promising fresh start. So for those of us who love to enhance the spirit of Christmas with the cheesiest Christmas movies, here’s a list of the most major box office successes.

Bad Santa

Bad Santa was filmed during the summer of 2002 in and around California and was released to theatres in 2003. The movie came out as a Christmas black comedy written by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa and directed by the talented Terry Zwigoff.

The movie was taken very well by critics and by the public, earning more than $76 million all over the world and $60 million domestically. The film also made a very high rating on Rotten Tomatoes, scoring 78%.

Jingle All The Way

While Jingle All The Way stars the one and only Arnold Schwarzenegger, something about the movie didn’t fly very well with critics, especially on Rotten Tomatoes. The 1996 Christmas movie follows the life of Howard, a father who promises his son to get a Turbo-Man as his Christmas present.

The task becomes challenging when another father, Sinbad, makes the same promise to his son, and the two end up fighting for the toy. Even though the movie is hilarious, critics believe that Schwarzenegger acts with an uneven tone throughout the movie. Still, the film certainly made it in the US box office, scoring a whopping $70,000,000.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

For those of us who love stories that get completely out of hand, this movie is perfect. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation Stars Chevy Chase as Clark Griswold, who promises his family an amazing Christmas.

The Griswold family planned a huge Christmas party with friends and family, but somehow, Clark manages to mess it up to the extent that was so serious, that Chevy Chase actually broke his pinky in real-life while performing one of the movie’s ‘angry’ scenes. The movie was so successful that it easily reached second place in the box office, grossing $11,750,203 only during the film’s opening weekend.

Office Christmas Party

Office Christmas Party came out in 2016, but it was also released and sold on Blu-ray and DVD with the title “Dirty Office Party.” The movie starred T.J Miller and Jason Bateman, and it’s basically about a holiday party that takes place at an office. In a really short summary, the sister of a company’s CEO threatens to shut down one of the company’s branches, so the company throws a huge office party in order to land a new client that should be able to save the day.

But like all good parties, the whole thing becomes a mess, and the party goes completely out of hand. Even though the movie was also not incredibly acclaimed by critics, it earned about $144.501.299.

A Madea Christmas

A Madea Christmas was first released back in 2013, and it quickly became one of the most-watched Christmas comedies ever. The movie was written, directed, and starred by the one and only Tyler Perry, and it earned a whopping $853,000 in the international box office and $52,543,354 in the domestic.

Curiously, Tyler Perry created Madea inspired by a combination of his own shows. Unfortunately, though, the movie wasn’t taken so well by the critics, scoring as low as 10% on Rotten Tomatoes.

A Bad Moms Christmas

A Bad Moms Christmas was written and directed by Scott Moore and Jon Lucas and stars all of our favorite actresses. The 2017 Christmas comedy is a sequel to the hilarious movie released a year before, Bad Moms.

The story follows three mothers played by Mila Kunis, Kathryn Hahn, and Kristen Bell, who struggle with their relationships with their own mothers that rocked up for Christmas celebrations that year. The movie earned $72.1 million in the US and Canada and grossed $130.6M worldwide.

The Best Man Holiday

The Best Man Holiday is one of those Christmas films that are perfect for a night in with wine, popcorn, and a couple of friends. Written and directed by Malcolm D. Lee, the comedy-drama was created as a sequel to the 1999 movie with the same name.

The Best Man Holiday follows a couple, Mia and Lance, who decided it’s time to bring all the friends together for Christmas dinner at their place after about ten years of not seeing each other. The movie mostly received very positive feedback from the public and grossed at $71 million around the world.

Fred Claus

Fun fact, the American fantasy comedy Fred Claus is actually based on a poem by Donald Henkel, “A Legend of Santa and His Brother Fred.” Fred Claus portrays the hilarious story of two brothers, Fred and Nick Claus, played by Vince Vaughn and Paul Giamatti.

In the movie, Fred, Santa’s brother, desperately needs to borrow $50,000 from his brother, who agrees to do so if Fred helps him with his work in the North Pole. After being released in 2008, the movie became the number one film in the UK, and grossed around $18,515,473, with the number increased after the first week.
