When an Elderly Woman Went Missing, Four Young Kids Came to the Rescue

Aging is a part of life. As much as some of us may try and fight the signs of aging, it is undeniable that each day after we are born, we get older. For a 97-year old woman named Glenneta Belford, she found herself suffering dementia, which impaired her mentally. A group of kids heard about this elderly woman and knew that they needed to step in and lend a helping hand. Glenneta was known for something particular in the facility she lived in. This would sometimes get her into trouble, and on this fateful day, she would definitely need the help of these kind children. Keep scrolling to see how these kids helped Glenneta during her hour of need.

What Is Dementia?

Dementia refers to a condition or disease that affects the brain. It specifically targets a person’s ability to remember things and perform daily tasks. Quite often, a person can become disoriented and forget where they are and what they are doing. For Glenneta, she found herself experiencing this condition. This is why she was placed in a home for the elderly in a city called Roseville, in the state of California.

She needed some help once in a while, and the facility she was placed in allowed her some autonomy. She was still free to wander around, but when she became a bit confused, there was always an orderly to help her get back to her room.

Getting Worse

The term dementia can be used to classify over 100 different conditions and diseases. Some of these types are degenerative diseases like Parkinson’s or Huntington, while others are Alzheimer’s. Most of these develop when tiny strokes occur in the brain or other bleeds, which lead to parts of the brain being damaged.

This damage is what affects the memory, ability to control specific muscle groups, and simply leading a normal daily life. The symptoms never decrease, and will progressively worsen as a person ages. That is why facilities, like the one that Glenneta was living in, are so important. They allow residents to maintain their dignity during a vulnerable time in their lives.

Wandering

Glenna herself suffers from Alzheimer’s, and one of the main symptoms is the urge to wander. Wandering essentially means that a person suffering from the dementia-related condition will have a thought, or want to go somewhere and set off for that destination.

At some point during the journey, they will become disoriented and forget where or what they had planned to do. This leads them to wander aimlessly until someone can assist them back to their living facility, or to a family member who is in charge of their well-being. It can be quite dangerous for a person with dementia to wander, as they are prone to mood swings as well.

Familiar Routes

When a person with dementia wanders, it may appear to be aimless. This tends not to be the case. Usually, a person will remember an old route they used to take to the grocery store or to drop their kids off at school. They may regress to this time period in their lives and want to relive it again.

Thus, they will go to a location that they once knew well. This can be a good tactic to follow when looking for someone that has gone wandering. They will tend to show up at the same location more often than not and take a familiar route. However, weather, traffic, and other perils can meet them along the way, so wanderers need to be found as quickly as possible.

Hide And Seek

Knowing how dangerous wandering can be, each resident at Glenneta’s care facility keeps an eye out for any residents that decide to go on a walkabout. Glenneta herself was known for wandering around, but she also had another dangerous trait, which made finding her difficult.

She likes to play a version of hide and seek, except that nobody can find her once she has decided to hide. When she went missing, the facility immediately called the police. If she had decided to hide, they would need professional help to find her. The Sacramento Police Department aided in the search by providing a helicopter.

Getting Dark

The fall months always see the days get shorter, and by 4:00 p.m., the police began to fear they would not find Glenneta before the sun went down. The helicopter from Sacramento continued to fly around the area announcing that they were searching for a woman in her 90s who may be hiding or appeared to be confused.

They hoped that she would make an appearance, or someone would be able to point them in the direction she had last been seen.

Social Media Help

With Facebook, one of the best ways to locate people these days, the Roseville Police Department decided to post a missing person report on their page. They included a picture of Glenneta and explained about her condition.

It said that she rarely speaks, and as she likes to hide, this may be a bit disconcerting for someone who comes across her. If anyone should find her, the police asked that they are called immediately to assist her back to her facility.

Into The Woods

The city of Roseville is very picturesque. It is surrounded by woods, with towering oaks, and other deciduous varieties. For the average person, going into the woods is a nice activity, for Glenneta though it poses a great risk.

Rob Baquera, who works for the communications team on the Roseville Police Force, wanted everyone to find Glenneta before she decided to enter the woods. If she was to head into the woods, tracking her would be even more difficult.

Kids To The Rescue

Makenna Rogers and Hope Claiborne were two children who heard the announcements being issued from the helicopter. They had been playing in the park and riding their bikes around the neighborhood at the time.

Hope and Makenna had never met Glenneta, but they understood that she needed to be found. Hide and seek was a game they knew well, and they had a feeling they would be able to find Glenneta if they looked hard enough.

Calling For Backup

Before Hope and Makenna set off to find Glenneta, they decided to enlist Hope’s brother Kashton, and his friend Logan Hultman. Together they would look for Glenneta and get her home safe and sound. Before the quartet even got started, though, Logan took a tumble from his bike.

He was cruising down an unpaved path when his wheel got stuck, and he found himself flying over the handlebars. All of the kids stopped biking and checked to make sure he was okay.

Going Out Again

Logan was a little cut up from his fall. The kids decided to get him patched up and grab a quick bite to eat back at their homes. While they had dinner, they worked on their game plan.

They knew that it was getting late, and Glenneta had been missing for a number of hours. Their parents offered to assist them with any news they heard while they were out biking. They would need to know if she was found so that they could stop looking.

A Picture

Hope’s dad found a picture of Glenneta online and sent it to her phone. She and her crew examined it and memorized Glenneta’s face. There were other elderly people in the neighborhood, and they wanted to be sure they were looking for the right person.

Daniel, Hope’s dad, never thought that this group of wily kids would be the ones to locate the missing woman. He just thought they were out on an adventure.

The Search Continues

After a number of hours, the children began to think that they would never find Glenneta. They went to all of their favorite places, like playgrounds, parks, and any other spots that an elderly woman might get lost in. All of the spots they liked to frequent they thought Glenneta might find interesting as well.

Eventually, though, the day drew to a close, and Glenneta was still nowhere to be found. There were one or two places these kids had yet to check, though.

Finding Glenneta

The night was coming, and at 6:30 p.m., the kids were ready to go home. Then, Hope saw a little old lady in the shadows near them. She bore a striking resemblance to Glenneta. Could it be her? Hope glanced down at the picture her father had sent earlier and quickly confirmed that it was indeed Glenneta.

All of their hard work had paid off, and they had found her. Everyone was thrilled that they would be able to get her home safe and sound.

Walking And Talking

Glenneta had actually wandered into Hope and Makenna’s neighborhood. She was very near to their houses and did appear somewhat disoriented. She was walking at a clipped pace and appeared to be carrying on a conversation with herself.

Logan had also seen Glenneta at the same time as Hope, and they all knew they needed to get her back to her facility right away. A lot of people were very worried about her.

Missing

It felt like a lot longer than two hours, but that is all the time it had been since the kids had started looking for her. They lived in a quiet neighborhood, but bordering that area was a very busy street. It was known for a lot of fast-moving cars, and very few crosswalks.

That was where Glenneta had been headed before the children found her. It was very important that they stopped her from crossing that busy road.

Calling For Help

All four of the children approached Glenneta and tried to determine if she was okay. She became a bit annoyed to find them blocking her path. Makenna and Hope asked her some questions, and she told them to leave her alone in no uncertain terms. Glenneta also appeared a bit confused to be talked to at all.

The kids immediately dialed 9-1-1 to let them know that they had found Glenneta and that the police could come and pick her up.

The Police Arrive

As soon as the 9-1-1 call came in, police sirens could be heard off in the distance. There was no way they were going to let Glenneta out of their sight now that these enterprising kids had found her. Glenneta needed to return to her facility, where she could be cared for properly.

The police commended Makenna, Hope, Logan, and Kashton on a job well done. They were detectives in the making! Now, Glenneta could go home.

Saving The Day

These four kids saved the day; there is no denying that. The Roseville Police Department wanted to acknowledge this, and Rob Baquera released a statement thanking them.

If the search had gone into the night, it would have been a lot harder to locate Glenneta. She was found to be in good condition, but a night out on the streets may have had some serious complications for her. Now, everyone can rest easy knowing she is safe.

Paying Tribute

After a month had passed, and the story had died down, the City of Roseville decided to thank all four kids for being good samaritans formally. They took to Facebook to thank them publicly.

If it was not for kids like this, Glenneta would not have been found as quickly. A community needs to band together and care for each other. That is exactly what these four did, and they deserve to be commended.

The Junior Team

Most of the people who had gone out searching that day were adults. There were very few children who took it upon themselves to help. In a situation like this, sometimes a child can have a unique perspective on where to search that an adult makes not think of.

These four were able to think outside of the box and find Glenneta in her hour of need. Everyone deserves to be commended for their help during this tricky situation, but these four are the ones that actually found Glenneta.

Going Viral

Once the city of Roseville’s post went life, people across California began to react. They then shared it, and it gained national attention. Everyone likes to hear about a heartwarming story such as this. It gives us hope that other communities will band together and help each other in their time of need.

We can learn from the example set by these children. It takes a whole community to watch out for one another.

Proud Parents

The parents of these four children are also very proud of them. They are happy to know that they raised their kids to care about others and work together as a team to solve any problems that are sent their way.

Not all children would have torn themselves away from video games or television shows to search for an elderly woman. These children are something special, and we hope to hear more stories like this in the future!
